Learning from Disasters for Crews (Surface & Underground Coal Versions Available)
A two-hour presentation developed to provide surface or undgerground coal mining workers, supervisors and managers with a strong understanding of the serious risks that can arise at coal mining operations, and how these risks can be systematically identified and controlled. The presentation is based upon legislated risk management principles including “Primary Duty of Care”, “Due Diligence” and “Reasonable Care”, along with Human and Organisational Factors. The program also includes the analysis of numerous Australian surface or underground coal mining industry fatal incidents. The presentation is suitable for whole of mine training days etc.
Course Content Includes:
· Mining Disasters & the benefits of learning from the past.
· Duties under the WHSA & their practical application to managing risk.
· Understanding “Gross Negligence” and “Reckless Conduct” (S31 WHSA).
· Managing Risks under the WHSA.
· Human & Organisational Factors & the role they play in fatal incidents.
· Discussion and analysis of fatal & serious surface or UG coal mining incidents and case studies.
· Aftermath of fatal incidents.
Learning Objectives Include:
· Manage risk in accordance with the WHS legislation & sound risk management principles.
· Understand & recognise recurrent risk management failures that may result in fatal incidents.
· Understand the role that Human and Organisational Factors play in serious and fatal incidents.
· Understand the role that individual workers, supervisors & managers play in controlling risk.
· Identify potential areas for improvement at their operations.
